Miners, crowns and temples: how game themes are made

Every game at Virtual Play Club has a clear theme: a miner deep in a cave, a royal crown, a jungle temple, a stage full of rubies. Choosing and building that theme is a big part of a game studio's work.

Starting with a story

Designers usually begin with a single idea that can be explained in a few words: "treasure in an old mine" or "a temple hidden in the jungle". Everything else — symbols, colours, music — grows from that idea.

Symbols that read at a glance

A symbol must be recognisable in a fraction of a second, even on a small phone. That is why crowns, gems, carts and torches work so well: they are simple shapes with strong colours. Crown Strike builds everything around one bold golden crown.

Characters

A friendly face makes a theme memorable. The smiling old miner of 3 Carts of Gold turns a cave into a cheerful place rather than a gloomy one.

Colour and light

Colour sets the mood. Fire Temple uses green jungle tones against hot orange flames; Ruby Hit places red stones on deep violet so that they glow. Contrast keeps the screen readable during fast animations.

Sound

Music and effects carry as much of the theme as the pictures: the rumble of a mine cart, a royal fanfare, crackling fire. Try a game with headphones and you will notice how much the soundtrack adds.
